WERA National Series #5 / Las Vegas Motor Speedway: Friday practices saw me re-learning the track after not running it for 3 years and getting a 1:36
through a few rounds of Practice. The afternoon sessions I notched it down to a 1:34 then a 1:33. I wasn't really happy with the times, but I was happy
with the improvement every time I went out. I had fresh tires for my practice rounds on Sunday and ran a 1:32 while I was scrubbing them in. Still happy with
the minor improvements for practice.
Minor footnote about practice: Provisional Novice racers where called to do practice starts. Grid where ever you please and get your start on. They all grid
towards the back, I am in the middle somewhere because I am not that much of a puss. Mind is else where and I am clicking the gears around trying to find
neutral for a second. I can't find it. Oh well hold the clutch and go for the gas. 1 minute board, 30 second, FLAG, stall. Re-Start the bike, stall. Click
the bike from 6th to 1st, start it, go.
Its really hard to get
back around the track with your tail between your legs. Shake it off, pull into the grid. Middle pack...1 min, 30 sec, GREEN FLAG.......Hole Shot, blew them
all out of the water, and led for a few turns.
Pull into the hot pits.
Official calls me over, "What was the difference between the first start and the second one?" with out even thinking I say, "Sixth gear and
First gear."
First race: Race #5 600cc Superstock Novice
By the time this race came around, I had forgot that I have never done this before and that it was 400 degrees outside. I got a decent start that was
suppose to be a two wave start, but wasn't so I got to the middle of the pack of 27 by turn 2. That didn't last long but I was there and made it
through. After a few laps I remembered that it was 400 degrees outside and had never done this before. Hanging it out, white flag with a few riders behind me,
I felt good but wanted to see a checker. Well, instead of a checker I see red. Race over. Before that I notice a fellow "rolling road cone"
(Provisional Novice) that I went to school with at Buttonwillow that was a lot slower than me then but he finished in front of me....damn. I finished 21st.
Second Race: Race #10 600cc Superbike Novice
This race felt really good. Great start, thru turn 1, Passing, and finishing the pass. 2nd lap I found myself behind someone that Harry had been dicing it up with a little so I had something to prove with staying there and possible passing this rider. So I hung there and put in some work, flying into the sweeper faster than before and finding some speed here and there. This all led me to my fastest lap of the weekend at 1:30.6 After that I got hit by lack of endurance and my feet feeling as if they were on fire. So I pulled way back untill I saw my fellow Agent Orange Shirt Racer schoolmate fly by. For some reason that lit more than my feet on fire and I dug deep and found enough to pass him back and keep him there till the finish. Full 8 laps, finished 18th out of 23.
